Drone Security on Grid-Connected Sites

How StratoClean answers utility security reviews: the aircraft carries no GPS fix, no Wi-Fi, no onboard storage and a non-recording camera, it does not map your site, and every flight is hand-flown.

What your security team is protecting

Operators of grid-connected generation restrict which drones may fly on their sites, and the
reason is consistent across every procedure we have been handed: a drone that can record, store,
position itself against, or transmit anything about generating assets is treated as a risk to the
security of the grid.

We are not going to argue with that position. We fly in a way that leaves the risk it describes
with no mechanism.

The aircraft produces no data

  • No position fix. There is no working GPS and no RTK on the aircraft. No
position data is produced, logged or exported.
  • No Wi-Fi, no cellular, no internet path. The only link is a direct radio
between the handheld controller and the aircraft.
  • No onboard storage. Nothing is written anywhere in the system during a
    flight.
  • The camera does not record. It streams a live picture to the pilot’s screen
so he can see the surface he is cleaning, and the feed is gone the moment it is displayed.
    No file is created.
  • No mapping or survey function. We do not map your site, your layout or your
    equipment.

The consequence matters more than the list: when we leave, there is no imagery, no telemetry, no
flight log and no survey product, because none was ever created. There is nothing to review,
retain, transmit or hand on to anyone.

Every flight is flown by hand

There are no waypoints, no mission plans and no autonomous flight of any kind. The pilot flies
the aircraft manually from takeoff to landing, with the asset in sight the whole time.

The work is vertical. The aircraft stays on the surface being cleaned, close to the operator and
in constant visual line of sight. It does not transit your site, pattern it, or overfly
neighbouring equipment. And because nothing on board is navigating, there is no track of where it
flew to exist afterwards.

Photographs taken on site

Before-and-after photographs for the service record are taken from the ground, framed on the
surfaces we cleaned. Your team is welcome to review them before they leave the site, and any frame
can be deleted at your request.

Working inside your procedure

We complete your drone authorization paperwork rather than asking you to accept ours, and we
work under your site’s own access, safety and work-control process. If your procedure asks for
something we have not covered here, send it over and we will have it completed before we mobilize.
